This is a small white porcelain box with a shape described as either “pine needle” or “cloud” shaped. It is believed to have been produced at the Ding kiln in the early Northern Song period. Interestingly, excellent white porcelain was also produced by the Liao in the northern regions at that time, and the design of this piece exudes an ambiance reminiscent of Liao porcelain.

At the center of the upper surface of the lid, a six-petaled flower is depicted, encircled by a double row of bead-like round patterns, suggesting that its original model might have been derived from metalwork such as silver or gold vessels. The stamped pattern is executed with finesse, with every detail rendered clearly, making this a charming piece. Moreover, considering that similar items in celadon or lacquer were also produced in Goryeo during the same period, it can be inferred that this type of vessel was very popular at the time. Initially, several pieces were combined to form a larger box, which is thought to have been used as either a spice container for the table or as a cosmetic case for women.

This piece was exhibited in 1984 at the Izumi City Kubosō Memorial Museum in the “Special Exhibition ‘Boxes’ – Lids of East Asia.”
