北朝筆記 vol.13 南北朝编织熏炉:青瓷與銀器的材質交融,哈佛大學藝術博物館所藏 - Nothern and Southern Dynasties Woven Basket, Silver and Celadon in Harvard Art Museum.

The Harvard Art Museums has two very interesting pieces from the Northern and Southern Dynasties to the early Sui Dynasty, one celadon and the other silver, both of which were sold in 2006 by the famous antiquities dealer J.J. Lally. The function of such wares is mysterious, and this piece of chased celadon has a circular hole in the base.

There is a similar piece in the Hebei Provincial Museum, attributed to the Han dynasty, which functions as a fumigation cage. The technique of weaving suggests that it is an inherited practice. Perhaps the holes in the bottom are related to the incense?

Wide cylindrical openwork ceramic container with sides modeled as a lattice of crossed vertical straps joined by matching horizontal straps to form three tiers of slender lozenge-shaped openings, tapering slightly inward above the flat foot, pierced with an opening in the center of the unglazed base light gray stoneware with pale olive green glaze. Place of manufacture uncertain, probably southern China. Paired with silver component 2006.170.225.2.

This interesting blend of contemporaneous materials is not intended to be a cost-saving exercise, but has a very clear artistic purpose. Bamboo baskets of this academic significance are rare worldwide.

It is believed that this early design immediately influenced the creation of similar forms at the Ding kilns of Song porcelain, the Ganzhou kilns, and various other northern kilns.
