The wine jars of the Southern and Northern Dynasties, including dish-mouth bottles and chadous, vividly illustrate the superb ceramic craftsmanship of the period.

Typically crafted from light gray stoneware with a celadon glaze and enhanced by incised decorations, these vessels are characterized by their compact, rounded forms and dished mouth designs often adorned with lotus motifs, symbolizing auspiciousness and vitality. Notably, a similar piece housed at Tokyo’s Uragami Soukyudo features an exceptionally lustrous glaze and a fuller, more robust belly, highlighting subtle differences in aesthetic ideals and technical execution among various schools.
Such works not only reflect the era’s balanced pursuit of functionality and refined artistry but also offer valuable insights into the evolution of ceramic form and ornamentation.
