Brush Washer
Longquan Ware
A Mei Zi Qing folding rim wash from the Longquan Kiln of the Southern Song Dynasty, with a diameter of 16.2 cm. This type of folding rim wash is extremely rare and beautifully exemplifies the simplicity and elegance of monochrome glazes from the Song Dynasty. A similar but slightly larger example (diameter 16.8 cm) is housed in the National Palace Museum in Taipei. The same form can also be found in a painting from the Qianlong period, titled Jing Tao Yun Gu (Plate 1). Both pieces are cataloged in De Jia Qu: The Ceramic Taste of Emperor Qianlong, Taipei, 2012, pp. 224-5, no. 104.
A similar piece is in the Beijing Palace Museum, with a powdery blue glaze. There are also comparable folding rim washes (with narrow folded rims) from the Southern Song official kiln and the Cizhou kiln in Julu County. A similar Longquan kiln folding rim wash was sold by Christie's in 2016 for $1,025,000, from the collection of Lin Yushan.
