Incense Burner in the Form of Archaic Li
The Longquan Kiln li-shaped censer is a classic vessel form whose design is derived from the Shang and Zhou bronze li. The Song dynasty was an era that revered antiquity, with Emperor Huizong leading a revivalist movement that saw the restoration of ritual practices and the casting of bronze vessels. In this cultural milieu, Song ceramics emerged as a transitional genre—one that not only carried forward ancient traditions but also paid homage to natural floral motifs, much like a blooming peony in the continuum of Chinese history.
The aesthetic appreciation of the Longquan Kiln li-shaped censer primarily emphasizes four aspects:
The overall size of the vessel.
The color of the glaze.
The condition of the glaze surface, including the characteristic craquelure patterns.
Its historical and cultural lineage.
References for comparative study include two large li-shaped censers from the former collection of the Clark couple and the collection of the Idemitsu Museum of Arts.
