唐代筆記 Vol.8 藍釉三彩弦紋匲:大唐帝國的絢爛與克里夫蘭博物館珍寶 - Blue Glaze Tripod Lion, the Glory of Tang Dyansty and the Chinese Art from the Cleveland Museum of Art Collection.

Overall: 14.4 cm (5 11/16 in.); Diameter of lid: 11.5 cm (4 1/2 in.)

Purchase from the J. H. Wade Fund 1948.228

This covered cylindrical jar with three animal feet is lavishly covered with a cobalt blue glaze in the exterior and an amber glaze in the interior. Of the colored lead glazes of sancai (three-color) ware, blue was preeminent and precious. Imported cobalt from Persia (Iran, Afghanistan) was used as a glaze colorant that yields a rich, brilliant blue of considerable splendor.

Refer to the SACA Society's publication ‘Exhibition Notes vol.4 Blue Glaze from Tang Emperor and Empress - Blue Glaze from Gongling by Li Hong, son of Wu Zetian’, where such blue wares were found by Empress Wu Zetian and the Empress.

Blue Glaze from Tang Emperor and Empress.’, in which such blue wares were found on the sons of the Empress and Wu Zetian.

This is a longstanding piece, acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1948, and is rare in that it has its original (and sadly fragile) stopper, which is relatively small in size, measuring only 14.4cm in height and 11.5cm in width, making it a lovely pocket-sized piece.

Nonetheless, the number of surviving examples of this type of vessel is extremely rare, and the number of surviving examples of this type in museums at home and abroad is probably in the single digits.
