Vessel in the form of a kundika with an upward spout at the shoulder and what appears to be a lid mounted on a long neck extending from the rounded body of the jar, but in one piece. Originally a metal vessel, the body of the jar was submerged in water, which was filled through a spout attached to the shoulder and poured through a narrow hole in the tip of the neck.

This piece appears to have been coated with white cosmetic clay (slips), with a cloudy white glaze extending to the base. There are some examples of white kundika vase, but very few of them have been excavated from chronological tombs, and very few bronze kundika have been recovered from tombs, too. This may be due to the fact that they were used as Buddhist ceremonial vessels and not in burials. On the basis of the few excavations, including metal vessels, the Tokiwayama Bunko suggests that this object is dated to the 8th century.

J.R.Burchard。

According to the label affixed to the underside of the bottle, it is attributed to Mrs. J.R. Burchard, and another white porcelain vase of the Tang dynasty, with a clear early publication record, is from the former collection of Samuel T. Peters (an early trustee of the Metropolitan who co-founded the first exhibition of Chinese ceramics in 1916), Frederick M. Mayer (a prominent collector), all of whom have a distinguished taste. The collection of Frederick M. Mayer, a renowned collector, is a remarkable legacy, his sale was educational in 1974.

This vase has a very prominent publication dating from the inaugural exhibition of the Oriental Ceramics Department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1916, plate No. 33. This exhibition was one of the founding stones of the Western appreciation of Oriental art, as both Boston and the Metropolitan opened Oriental Ceramics Departments, with art advisor Tenshin Okakura, who authored The Book fo Tea.

Several of the collectors in this exhibition were among the leading early American collectors, and the SACA Society has written about the famous Grenville L. Winthrop, most of whose collection, including the important Tianlongshan Grotto collection, is now housed at the Harvard University Art Museums.
