宋代筆記 vol.68 德川家的唐物黃天目茶碗 - Ki-Tenmoku, the Yellow Glaze Karamono Tea bowl - Tokugawa Art Museum.

  1. 釉色特殊,傳世作品中極為罕見;

  2. 尺寸較小,深腹的造型也十分罕見;

This yellow Tenmoku tea bowl is a typical example of a well-preserved tradition, in the collection of the Tokugawa Museum of Art. It was made at the Chayang kiln in Fujian province, China, during the Southern Song dynasty. This yellow-coloured tenmoku is extremely rare, with a black, rounded slip at the bottom where the glaze has built up.

The special highlights are:

The glaze colour is exceptional and extremely rare amongst the surviving works;

The small size and deep belly of the bottle are also very rare;

The iridescent colours clouding over the original glaze is a distinct feature of Heirloom pieces.

It is worth noting that the Tokugawa Museum of Art also has a number of these smaller sized tenmoku tea bowls in its collection of Kensan (建盞). The use of these bowls in the tea ceremony can be related to the tea ceremony of the tea box. A similarly small sized Tenomku bowl was excavated from Mantou Mountain in the Southern Song Dynasty, and smaller sizes of Jian were also found in the Southern Song Dynasty in China, which may be related to a different method of tea making.
